01Inheritance
Two inheritances shaped this house before it had a name. One was a line of Shinto priests, who served the gods of Japan. The other was a father — a busshi, a carver of Buddhist figures, who worked wood and metal until something living looked back.
A boy grew up watching those hands. Before he understood what he was learning, he had learned it: that a feeling can be given a form, and that the form must be exact.
02The Distance
He went into stones and precious metal — into the European tradition of adornment, which he learned the way one learns a foreign language. Completely, and from the outside. Twenty years in, he stopped and looked back at what he had grown up inside.
Stillness. Restraint. Ornament worn not for display but for protection — the amulet, kept close, meant only for the person wearing it.
He made a promise: that this would not stay in Japan. From that promise came Japone.
03The Mark
In the nineteenth century, Europe fell in love with Japanese art and gave the infatuation a name — Japonisme. It was, for the most part, a surface. A fashion for motifs. Japone. takes the name and goes past the surface.
The full stop is not punctuation. It is the mark a maker leaves: set by hand, one piece at a time, and not open to negotiation. It is also a star — small, fixed, and meant to guide whoever wears it.
04Outward
Then, another decade and more.
Prayer, carried in a pattern. Metal with real weight to it, and nothing loud about it. Thirty years have gone into this, and only now is it going out — past borders, past eras, to the people who are looking for the same thing.
